Protest Breaks into Violence

For those of you non-salvadorans out there (or those salvadorans who just don’t know what’s going on in the country), yesterday morning there was a shooting between protesters (for public transportation fees, electricity rates, and low minimum wages) and the police outside the University of El Salvador (UES). Regretfuly, there were two casualties and several wounded, a university official amongst them. During the shooting, no one was allowed in or out of campus.

At that time, I was in a faculty meeting at the School of Natural Sciences & Mathematics, so I could hear the shots and the helicopters flying around. Luckily, as I show in the map below, my School (green) is relatively far away from yesterday’s shooting grounds (orange), so we were relatively safe from gunfire. As a safety measure, we closed all entrances to the building and remained inside until the police evacuated the university campus at around 1pm.

You can download a short video of what happened , as published by a local paper. You can also read the short story published by MSNBC and the official statement from my university (in spanish).
